This blog post is short but interesting.
I was listening to a Webinar from the people at Marketing Experiments and they had some interesting statistics from some research they did.
As part of that research they asked the question “Which email options would increase your likelihood of opting in as email subscriber?”
This was the response…
This shows the e-mail option and the percentage of people who said it was much more likely and somewhat more likely to opt-in if the option was available.
| E-mail Option | Much More Likely | Somewhat More Likely |
| Guarantee not to share e-mail address with other companies | 43% | 23% |
| Special pricing for e-mail subscribers | 32% | 29% |
| Ability to customize how frequently you receive e-mail | 27% | 30% |
| First look at new products | 22% | 28% |
This certainly explains why everyone sees an increase in conversions by putting in the statement about not sharing e-mail addresses.
The one that surprises me, and the one I do not do, and most people don’t, is the third one but 57% of the people said it would make then at least somewhat more likely to opt-in.
That’s a pretty big percentage and make me think I should be doing it, although I can’t remember anyone who is and the technology isn’t present to assist in doing it automatically (at least in this industry).
So there you have it, some simple ways to increase your conversion rate.

Hi David,
Great survey and I think the statistics speak for themselves.
It’s good to know what might have been missing to raising the optin rates.
I personally like the option as to how often I get the mails myself. Definately a keeper.

Hi,
Yeah, I agree.
There is not much support for letting the user have control in the common e-mail software like Aweber or GetResponse.
Those Marketing Experiments people are really good with doing this type of research.
I’ve been following them for a while now and listening to their webinars (there’s one tomorrow) and reading their research papers.
The “Comedian turned Internet Marketer” is interesting and intriguing, the makings of a good story in a sales page!
Just reading it makes me want to know more so it is definitely working, intended or not.
Later,
David
I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
Have you ever considered adding more videos to your blog posts to keep the readers more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner
Yes I have but it is easier for me to write (and I can do that anywhere).
I will do more this year though.
Thanks,
David
